US President Donald Trump began his new “Board of Peace” at a meeting in Davos on Thursday. The start included a signing ceremony for this new group.
Leaders from 19 countries stood with Trump to sign the board’s founding charter. Among them were his allies, like those from Argentina and Hungary.
Trump is the chairman of the Board of Peace. He commented on the leaders present, saying,
“In most cases very popular leaders, in some cases not so popular.”
The board was first meant to oversee peace in Gaza after the Israel-Hamas war. Now, its charter gives it a broader job of solving global conflicts. This makes some worry it could compete with the United Nations.
However, Trump stated the new board would work together with the UN.
The list of invited members is causing debate. Trump has asked Russian President Vladimir Putin, who ordered the invasion of Ukraine four years ago, to join.
Trump claims Putin agreed, but the Russian leader says he is still thinking about it. Also, permanent members must pay $1 billion to join, leading some to call it a “pay to play” version of the UN Security Council.
Important US allies like France and Britain are doubtful. The UK said it would not attend the signing ceremony.
Most leaders on stage were close to Trump, like Hungary’s Viktor Orban, or wanted to show support for him. Officials from many other nations, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, also signed.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was not there but says he will join. He faces an International Criminal Court arrest warrant related to the Gaza war.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the board’s main focus is making the Gaza peace deal last. Trump warned that Hamas must disarm in the next phase of the ceasefire or face destruction.
The board’s launch happens as Trump has expressed frustration over never winning the Nobel Peace Prize, despite his claims of ending conflicts.
Putin’s possible membership worries US allies, especially Ukraine. Trump plans to meet Ukraine’s President Zelensky in Davos to discuss a ceasefire.

Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, said talks to end the Ukraine war have made “a lot of progress” and are down to one final issue. He will meet Putin in Moscow later Thursday.
Meanwhile, Zelensky fears Trump’s recent push to buy Greenland could take attention away from Russia’s war on Ukraine. That topic has been big at Davos.
On a related issue, Trump said he reached a “framework of a future deal” with NATO’s chief. This includes waiving planned tariffs on European allies. Reports suggest a old defense pact about Greenland will be renegotiated.
