Tragedy at IBB University: Student Dies After Mismanaging Rent Money on Gambling

The Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) University, Lapai community is in deep mourning following the tragic death of Kelvin Danlami, a 300-level Computer Science student, in an incident reportedly linked to gambling.

According to sources, Kelvin reportedly lost his life on Monday, 19 January 2026, after mismanaging N150,000 that was entrusted to him for his house rent.

The young student, who had so much potential, reportedly fell victim to the dangerous lure of gambling, an act that ultimately cost him his life.

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of IBBU, in a statement signed by Comr Aliyu Abubakar, General Secretary, described Kelvin’s passing as “a tragic and irreplaceable loss”. They expressed heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire university community.

The statement read:

“On behalf of the entire student body of IBB University, Lapai, we extend our deepest condolences to the family of Kelvin Danlami, his relatives, friends, the Department of Computer Science, and all students of the University over this painful and unfortunate loss.”

“We pray that Almighty God grants his family the strength, comfort, and courage to bear this moment of grief, and that He consoles his colleagues and loved ones.”

Kelvin’s untimely death has sent shockwaves through the university, with students and staff struggling to cope with the tragedy. Many people have described him as a promising student with big dreams and a bright future.

His demise is now prompting serious conversations about the dangers of gambling and the need for awareness and support services to help students manage such pressures.

Close friends of Kelvin have recounted his cheerful and ambitious nature, painting the picture of a young man who, despite his struggles, always had a smile for those around him.

“He was our friend, our brother”.one friend said; It is hard to believe that such a tragedy could happen, tears welling in his eyes”.

The SUG has also urged students to be vigilant, to seek help when needed, and to avoid falling into habits that can have devastating consequences.

They emphasised that the university is committed to creating support systems to help students deal with stress, financial pressures, and other challenges they might face.

Kelvin Danlami’s passing is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the unseen struggles many young people face.
