Syrian Army Recapture 81 ISIS Prisoners After Mass Jailbreak in Northeastern Syria

Damascus — Syrian security forces have recaptured 81 ISIS detainees who escaped from a prison in northeastern Syria, the country’s Interior Ministry announced Tuesday, as a massive search operation continues for the remaining fugitives.

A total of 120 ISIS detainees escaped from al-Shaddadi prison in Hasakah province, which was under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Syrian officials blamed the YPG/SDF for allowing the escape to occur.

The Syrian Army and special security units quickly deployed to the city of al-Shaddadi following the breakout. Soldiers surrounded the area to prevent further movement of the escapees and immediately launched a comprehensive search operation.

According to the Interior Ministry, the operation covered the city and surrounding areas. Security forces successfully apprehended 81 ISIS members, who are now back in custody. The search for the remaining 39 escapees continues, with officials vowing not to cease operations until everyone is found.

The incident represents a significant security challenge for Syria as the country attempts to consolidate control over areas previously held by various armed groups and prevent the resurgence of ISIS, which once controlled vast territories across Syria and Iraq.

The jailbreak comes amid broader efforts by Syrian authorities to improve security across the country after years of devastating conflict that has displaced millions and left much of the nation’s infrastructure in ruins.

In a related development, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa announced a ceasefire on Sunday evening that includes provisions for the SDF group to be integrated into state institutions. Under this agreement, SDF fighters will withdraw from areas east of the Euphrates River.

The Syrian government is set to take control of Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor provinces, both strategically important regions. Border crossings, oil and gas fields, and public offices in these areas will return to state control as part of the agreement.

SDF members who pass security vetting may subsequently join the Syrian army or police forces, facilitating their integration into national security structures.

The decision to pursue this integration followed military actions by the Syrian Army after what Damascus described as repeated violations by the SDF. Syrian authorities view the consolidation of control over these territories as essential to preventing security gaps that could be exploited by terrorist organizations.

The mass escape from al-Shaddadi prison underscores the ongoing challenges Syria faces in securing detention facilities holding ISIS fighters and preventing the group’s potential resurgence. Thousands of ISIS fighters and their family members remain in detention camps across northeastern Syria, presenting long-term security and humanitarian challenges.
