The Spanish national team has suffered a huge loss as world number one Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Davis Cup Finals in Bologna due to a hamstring injury.

The 22-year-old took to Instagram to express disappointment, saying he is heartbroken to miss a chance to compete for his country. The tennis player further stated that playing for his country is "the greatest thing there is." He concluded the post by saying, "I'm going home heartbroken...

Alcaraz, who secured the world number one ranking for the second time in his career last week, has picked up an injury during the atp">ATP Finals on Sunday.

The Spanish Tennis Federation confirmed the injury that caused discomfort to the back of his thighs was reported to have started during his first set with Italian Sinner, where he lost 7-6, 7-4, and 7-5.

The Spanish medical team revealed that the tennis star is suffering from a hamstring caused by "significant muscle strain with marked oedema" (swelling) in his right thigh and has been strongly advised not to take part in the quarterfinal match that will be against the Czech Republic on Thursday.

Alcaraz's withdrawal is set to be a huge setback for Spain, as the hopes of taking home the "Salad Bowl" trophy have diminished. He has joined the list of injured players following world number two Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, who have all been out as a result of injury.

With the likes of Alcaraz, Sinner, and Musetti all out of the game, Germany's Alexander Zverev, world number three, is the only top 10-ranked player still in the game.

Spain are now forced to replace Carlos Alcaraz with Jaume Munar, who is considered the highest in the Spanish squad to play against the Czech Republic. Alcaraz is left with no option now than to focus on recovery against the start of next season.
