Staff of Radio Benue on Monday held a peaceful protest at the station’s main office along Old Otukpo Road in Makurdi. They said they were unhappy with how their salaries were being handled.
The workers asked for the full payment of the new minimum wage. They also called for an end to salary deductions they described as unfair.
The protesters also complained about poor power supply at the station. They said the breakdown of the generator has made broadcasting very difficult.
According to the workers, the power problem has affected regular radio programmes. They said listeners are no longer getting clear and steady broadcasts.
One staff member, who did not want his name mentioned, spoke to journalists in Makurdi. He said the new minimum wage started in 2025, but workers were paid only in November.
He explained that when the salary was finally paid, many workers noticed heavy deductions. Some staff members reportedly lost as much as N72,000 from their pay.
The staff member said several letters were sent to the Office of the Head of Service to complain about the deductions. However, he said nothing was done to fix the problem.
He added that the issue was later reported to Governor Hyacinth Alia. This happened during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day church service at Deeper Life Church.
During the service, the chapel chairman, Paul Mandeun, asked the governor to help. The governor said he was not aware of the deductions.
The governor then ordered the Accountant-General and the Head of Service, Agbogbo Ode, to investigate the matter. He told them to solve the problem within one week.
The staff member said that the order was not carried out. This failure, he said, led the workers to come out and protest.
The workers also asked for a new transmitter and solar panels. They said these would help the station broadcast government activities better.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Information, Dr Peter Egbodo, met with the protesters. He promised to work with the Head of Service to make sure their complaints are resolved.
