Nigerian Police have rescued two Ghanaian women, including 48-year-old Anastasia Arthur, from a cross-border kidnapping syndicate that lured victims through a fake Facebook romance. The daring operation followed weeks of coordinated intelligence efforts between Nigerian and Ghanaian authorities.

The nightmare began when Ms. Arthur was tricked into an online relationship with someone who appeared charming and trustworthy. But behind the smiling profile was a well-organized kidnapping syndicate that operated between Ghana and Nigeria.

After she went missing, her family filed a report with the National Central Bureau in Abuja. This sparked a fast-moving investigation led by Nigeria’s crack Intelligence Response Team (IRT). According to the Nigerian police spokesperson ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, detectives quickly learned that this was no ordinary disappearance.

The case took a dark turn when the police discovered that the abduction was part of a broader scheme. The syndicate didn’t just scam women online—they kidnapped them for ransom.

The Nigerian police made a breakthrough when they arrested 27-year-old Emeka Christian in Bolgatanga, a town in Upper Eastern Ghana. He admitted to receiving GH₵10,000 in ransom money using his Ghanaian mobile account. Emeka later transferred the funds into a Nigerian bank account belonging to another suspect—Peter Okoye.

On May 1st, Nigerian police tracked down Okoye in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He wasn’t alone. Officers also arrested two other men: Paulinus Chidokwe and Chinonso Okafor, both 35 years old. The raid led to the rescue of Ms. Arthur and another Ghanaian woman, Amaseerwaa Konadu.

The Nigerian police found the women in harsh, dehumanizing conditions. They were taken straight to a hospital for medical care. Doctors say both are stable but still traumatized by what they endured.

“These women suffered deeply. We acted swiftly to save them, and justice will be served,” said ACP Adejobi.

Investigators believe the group may have more victims and collaborators. The suspects are being questioned, and the Nigerian police are working with Ghanaian authorities to find others involved in the criminal ring.

Inspector-General of Nigerian Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun praised the operation. He said the rescue proved how strong cross-border cooperation can bring down dangerous networks.

“This success shows how committed the Nigeria Police is to stopping crime that crosses our borders,” Egbetokun said. “We will keep working with our international partners to protect lives.”

He urged Nigerians and Ghanaians to be careful online, especially with people who ask for money or personal information too quickly. “Romance scams are growing fast. Always report anything suspicious,” he added.

For Ms. Arthur and Ms. Konadu, what began as innocent chats filled with charm and promises quickly turned into a terrifying trap. They were lured by sweet words but ended up in a nightmare far from home. Their hope dimmed with each passing day — until a rescue mission brought them back. Thanks to the swift action of authorities and tireless cooperation between agencies, both women are now free and safe. Their story serves as a powerful warning about online deception and the danger that can lurk behind a smiling profile picture.
