Malami EFCC Summons Nigeria Investigation 2024

Former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami responds to EFCC summons, promises full transparency and cooperation.

Abubakar malami">malami">Malami, the lawyer who once held Nigeria’s most powerful legal office, has confirmed that anti-graft officials want to speak with him.

The former Attorney-General made the announcement himself on Friday through his social media account, saying he would cooperate fully with investigators.

For someone who spent years prosecuting others, the tables have now turned. malami">malami">Malami told Nigerians he received an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and would honor it without delay.

“This is to confirm that I have been invited by the efcc">efcc">EFCC. As a law-abiding and patriotic citizen, I hereby reaffirm my commitment to honour the invitation,” he wrote on X.

The announcement caught many by surprise, though whispers about potential investigations into former government officials have circulated for months.

malami">malami">Malami served as Minister of Justice and Attorney-General under former President Muhammadu Buhari, holding one of the most sensitive positions in the administration.

He didn’t say what the commission wants to discuss with him. But he made clear he had nothing to hide and everything to explain.

“I am informing my family and friends that efcc">efcc">EFCC has invited me to clarify on some issues, and as a citizen of law and order and patriot, I am willing to honor this invitation without any hesitation,” malami">malami">Malami declared.

The senior lawyer emphasized that his career has always been built on transparency.

He reminded Nigerians that accountability in public service isn’t just something he talks about but something he practices.

“I understand the spirit of accountability and transparency in public service, the principles that I both advocate and champion,” he stated.

Those who know malami">malami">Malami’s reputation understand he rarely backs down from legal confrontations.

Throughout his tenure as AGF, he positioned himself as a defender of the rule of law, even when some of his actions drew criticism from civil society groups and opposition figures.

Now facing scrutiny himself, he maintains the same public posture of confidence. He told his followers that honesty and integrity have shaped his leadership style throughout his time in government.

“I believe in the importance of honesty, integrity and honesty in leadership, these are principles I’ve long supported and uphold, over the years I’ve spent in public service,” he said.

The efcc">efcc">EFCC has not released any statement explaining why they want to question the former minister. The commission typically keeps investigation details confidential until formal charges are filed or cleared.

According to The Gazette News (Nigeria) and other sources, no official word has come from the anti-corruption agency about what specific matters they want malami">malami">Malami to address.

This silence has left room for speculation across Nigerian social media and news platforms. Some observers point to various controversial decisions made during his tenure.

Others suggest this could be routine questioning related to administrative matters from his time in office.

malami">malami">Malami promised to keep the public informed as things develop. He said transparency matters especially when public interest is involved.

“On this note, I am informing Nigerians of any development that will follow, so that everyone will be aware,” he added.

True to his word, the former AGF provided an update on Saturday. He confirmed he had visited the efcc">efcc">EFCC offices and answered their questions. More importantly, he said investigators allowed him to return home afterward.

“In line with my undertaking to keep Nigerians updated on my invitation by efcc">efcc">efcc, I give glory to Allah for his divine intervention,” he wrote.

He described the session as successful and said both sides agreed to meet again on a future date. malami">malami">Malami characterized the allegations against him as fabricated but said the truth would emerge through proper engagement.

“The engagement was successful and I am eventually released while on an appointment for further engagement as the truth relating to the fabricated allegations against me continue to unfold,” he stated.

His choice of words suggests he believes someone is working to damage his reputation through false claims. Whether these allegations are indeed fabricated or have substance remains to be seen as the efcc">efcc">EFCC continues its work.

The development adds malami">malami">Malami to a growing list of former government officials who have faced questions from anti-corruption agencies since the current administration took office.

President Bola Tinubu has promised to tackle corruption regardless of political affiliation or past positions held.

For ordinary Nigerians watching this drama unfold, the question remains whether these investigations will lead to meaningful accountability or simply become another chapter in the endless cycle of political score-settling that has characterized previous administrations.

malami">malami">Malami’s willingness to appear voluntarily and his public communication strategy may work in his favor.

Unlike some officials who go underground when summoned by anti-graft agencies, he has chosen visibility and declared cooperation.

The coming weeks will reveal whether his confidence is justified or misplaced.

For now, the former Attorney-General waits for his next appointment with the efcc">efcc">EFCC, maintaining his innocence while promising to help investigators uncover what he calls the truth.
