The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has officially commenced a major review of the curriculum for Nigeria’s colleges of education, including the 2020 Edition of the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) Minimum Standards.
The initiative aims to enhance the quality and relevance of teacher education across the country.
The announcement was made by the Executive Secretary of NCCE, Professor Paulinus Chijioke Okwelle, during the flag-off of the review exercise at Nasarawa College of Education, Akwanga.
According to Professor Okwelle, the review is designed to address current gaps in teacher preparation while taking into account national priorities, global education trends, and the practical realities facing teacher training institutions.
He stated,
“This exercise brings together a wide range of stakeholders, including teacher educators, policymakers, practitioners, and development partners.
Their collective expertise will ensure that the revised curriculum is robust, practical, and globally relevant”.
The review process will result in a curriculum framework that integrates emerging digital competencies, including AI awareness, ethical use of technology, data literacy, and adaptive digital pedagogy.
Professor Okwelle emphasized that these enhancements are intended to equip future teachers with the skills to manage technology-rich classrooms effectively and to prepare students for the future of work.
He further recalled that the National Policy on Education (revised 2013) established the NCE as the minimum qualification for entry into the teaching profession at the basic education level.
He stated,
“The relevance, quality, and effectiveness of the NCE minimum standards are crucial for national development,” he stated”.
Professor Okwelle added,
“The NCCE is committed to producing minimum standards that are academically rigorous, practically implementable, and responsive to the needs of contemporary classrooms.”
“By doing so, we aim to strengthen the teaching profession and ensure that Nigerian educators are well-prepared to meet global standards and local educational needs.”
The review is expected to result in a curriculum that not only modernises teacher training in Nigeria but also positions the country’s education system to keep pace with international best practices.
