Mexican President Praises “Very Good” Call With Trump on Security and Trade

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she spoke with US President Donald Trump on Monday and had a positive conversation.

She said they talked calmly and respectfully about important topics. These included keeping people safe, stopping illegal drugs, and improving trade between the two countries. Sheinbaum explained that Mexico wants to work together with the United States but still make its own decisions as a country.

“When we work together with respect for each other, good things can happen,” she said in a message shared online.

So far, neither the United States government nor President Trump have commented on the phone call.

This call happened after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Mexico’s foreign minister on Sunday. They discussed ways to work together to stop violent criminal groups and prevent the illegal movement of drugs like fentanyl and weapons.

In recent years, tensions between the United States and Mexico have grown. Last year, President Trump imposed additional taxes on Mexican imports. He stated that this was to reduce illegal immigration, drug smuggling, and trade issues.

On Friday, Mexican President Sheinbaum asked for better teamwork between both countries after Trump said the U.S. might attack drug cartels near the border. Trump has stated that he believes criminal organisations have too much power in Mexico, calling the situation “sad to see.”
