Logistics Offers ₦15,000 for Missing ₦230,000 Hair

GIG Logistics offers to pay ₦15,000 for the missing ₦230,000 hair, following the client’s value of the item declared on the waybill.

A Nigerian lady has taken her frustration to the street and social media to call the attention of GIG Logistics after a high-value package worth ₦230,000 went missing.

The customer sent a waybill containing expensive hair in September, but weeks later the receiver is yet to receive the package. GIG eventually later declared the package missing.

The major point of conflict is the vast difference between the actual value of the lost item (₦230,000) and the compensation offered (₦15,000).

This situation highlights a common, but often frustrating, clause found in the standard terms and conditions of many logistics companies: limited liability.

GIG Logistics‘ Terms: According to publicly available terms and conditions, GIG Logistics’ standard liability for loss or damage is generally limited to the declared value of the item as stated on the waybill. Crucially, the liability is usually capped unless the shipper purchased additional insurance.

The Problem: If the customer did not purchase full-value insurance (which typically costs a small percentage of the item’s total value, often around 5%), they are usually bound by the logistics company’s standard, much lower liability cap—which appears to be the ₦15,000 being offered.

This incident serves as a crucial warning to all individuals and small businesses shipping expensive items:

Always Declare Full Value: Ensure the full, actual worth of the item is declared on the waybill, as this often sets the maximum liability.

Purchase Insurance: For items over a few thousand Naira, always opt for and pay for the full-value insurance offered by the courier. This is the only way to guarantee a full refund for the item’s complete worth if it is lost or damaged.

Keep Documentation: Maintain all purchase invoices, waybill receipts, and insurance payment proof for smooth claims processing.

The customer’s public call-out aims to pressure GIG Logistics into increasing the compensation, but legally, the outcome often depends on the specific terms agreed upon at the time of shipping.
