In a distressing report that has sparked outrage on social media, Lagos-based content creator and entrepreneur Fems Thrift has come forward with allegations of sexual assault following a coordinated “modelling scam”.

The incident, which was noted as Feb 8 in her viral testimony, highlights the dangerous rise of “travel-returnee” scams targeting young female influencers in Nigeria.

According to the victims, a man claiming to be a UK-based fashion designer is going to launch an international brand in Nigeria. The man allegedly offered ₦140,000 for a single modelling session and social media promotion.

Sensing risk and also trying to be security conscious, Fems insisted on a professional production team being present and brought a female friend along for safety.

Upon arrival at the designated location in Ajao Estate, the promised “production team” was nonexistent. The situation quickly escalated into a violent confrontation and sexual assault.

Following the video making rounds on social media, the Lagos State Police Command quickly made a quick response. As of Friday! On 3rd February, the police confirm that the suspect has been apprehended.

The Command has urged other victims of this specific individual to come forward to strengthen the case. Safety measures have been set in place for individuals to watch out in order to avoid such incidents.

Here are some safety protocols to keep in mind.

  • Public Meet-ups First: Never go straight to a “set” or private residence. Meet the client in a public cafe first.
  • Verify Brand Identity: Check for a registered business name (CAC), a verifiable website, and a history of previous shoots.
  • Live Location Sharing: Always keep your “Live Location” on and shared with at least three trusted contacts.
