Kebbi Governor Approves N715 Million for Indigene Students

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has approved the release of N714.98 million to support the overseas education and training of indigenous students, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to advancing tertiary education in the state.

The Commissioner for Higher Education, Alhaji Isah Abubakar-Tunga, disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.

He said:

“The approvals form part of Gov. Idris’ ongoing efforts to modernize and revamp tertiary education in Kebbi State, aligning local institutions and students with international standards.” 

Alhaji Abubakar-Tunga explained that N247.5 million was approved for the payment of registration, tuition, visa extension, internships, and other financial assistance for Kebbi indigenes studying medicine, pharmacy, and medical and allied sciences at prominent universities in India, including Subharti University, GD Goenka University, and Jaipur National University.

The funding ensures that students pursuing these high-demand programmes can access quality education abroad without financial barriers, allowing them to gain global exposure and specialised skills.

In addition, N117.68 million has been allocated as upkeep allowances for 25 Kebbi students studying medicine in seven universities across Egypt.

This support covers living expenses, accommodation, and other essential needs, allowing the students to focus entirely on their rigorous medical programmes while abroad.

The governor also approved N349.73 million for registration, tuition, and upkeep allowances for 35 students proceeding to Ethiopia to study medicine and pharmacy.

According to the commissioner, these interventions, all granted in January, reflect the total commitment of N714.98 million to the Ministry of Higher Education within the period.

Beyond student funding, the ministry also announced the appointment of Dr. Muhammed Murtala-Musa as the pioneer Provost of Kauran Gwandu College of Midwifery Sciences, Ambursa.

The commissioner emphasised that this appointment is part of a broader strategy to strengthen local institutions, improve professional training, and sustain the governor’s educational development agenda across the state.

Governor Idris’ initiatives are aimed not only at supporting overseas education but also at enhancing the overall quality and competitiveness of Kebbi State’s tertiary education.

By investing in both human capital and institutional leadership, the administration ensures that students gain skills and qualifications that meet global standards, while local colleges and universities benefit from structured leadership and improved governance practices.
