The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has said that Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf did not leave the party for selfish reasons.
The party said Yusuf left because he felt controlled and oppressed by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.
NNPP leaders claimed that Kwankwaso wanted to dominate Yusuf and interfere in how Kano State is governed.
They also said Kwankwaso, not Yusuf, was the real betrayer of the party’s founder, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam.
According to the party, Yusuf made several efforts to settle the crisis, but his moves were met with pride and greed.
The NNPP made these remarks in response to statements made by Buba Galadima regarding Yusuf’s defection.
In a statement, the party’s Northwest Vice Chairman, Alhaji Sani Danmasani, spoke strongly against Kwankwaso and Galadima.
He said Yusuf’s move to the APC had caused anger and emotional pain for both men.
The party claimed their public speeches showed bitterness and deep frustration.
NNPP also recalled how Galadima once took a long, risky road trip to meet Aniebonam to secure a party platform before the 2023 elections.
The party said it was unfair to accuse Yusuf of betrayal when others benefited freely from the NNPP platform.
The NNPP concluded that Yusuf’s decision was an act of self-defense and said Kwankwaso’s influence would not stop Yusuf from winning re-election in 2027.
