Don Lemon Clashes With Nicki Minaj Over Protest Coverage

Former CNN anchor Don Lemon and rapper Nicki Minaj engaged in a heated public exchange on social media following controversial coverage of anti-ICE protests in Minnesota that disrupted a church service.

The confrontation began when Lemon covered protests in St. Paul, Minnesota, where demonstrators entered a church during services. Minaj responded with a strong social media post criticising Lemon’s attendance at the protest.

In an Instagram video posted Monday, January 19, Lemon addressed Minaj’s comments directly.

“People have been asking about responding to Nicki Minaj’s unhinged, homophobic tweet about me,” Lemon began. “I usually don’t respond to this stuff, but let me just say this: Nicki Minaj, stop talking about things which you know nothing about. This is out of your depth, by the way.”

Lemon continued his critique, stating that Minaj “doesn’t understand politics” and “doesn’t understand journalism,” adding that he was “not surprised that she is weighing in on something that is beyond her capacity.”

After Lemon’s on-the-ground coverage of the protest that interrupted services at a St. Paul church, Minaj took to her X account to share her thoughts, posting an image and accusing Lemon of behaviour she found objectionable. She demanded legal action and suggested Lemon would not have taken similar actions at places of worship for other religions.

Lemon responded by calling Minaj politically expedient and stating she “will do anything” for political convenience.

“She’s ignorant. She doesn’t know what she’s talking about. She’s always weighing in on things that she doesn’t know about,” Lemon said, concluding by telling the rapper to “sit the f-ck down.”

As media coverage of the exchange spread, Minaj responded to supporters on social media, defending her approach and stating she deliberately crafted her message to ensure media outlets would cover the story.

“I purposely wrote it that way because I knew that would be the only way to get [media] to post about it,” she explained. “They would’ve all collectively ignored the despicable behavior displayed by Lemon. I’m glad they’re angry. They’re about to get angrier.”

The Department of Justice’s Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, Harmeet Dhillon, told podcaster Benny Johnson that the DOJ is considering charging Lemon under the Ku Klux Klan Act for his conduct at the protest and that Lemon is officially “on notice”.

Dhillon also noted that the federal executive agency is investigating the demonstration as a potential violation of the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, or FACE Act, which prohibits injuring, intimidating, or interfering with public access to religious places of worship and reproductive health services.

“Don Lemon himself has come out and said he knew exactly what was going to happen inside that facility,” Dhillon said on The Benny Show. “He went into the facility, and then he began ‘committing journalism’, as if that’s sort of a shield from being part, an embedded part, of a criminal conspiracy. It isn’t.”

The controversy highlights ongoing debates about journalistic coverage of protests, freedom of expression, and the boundaries between reporting and participation in demonstrations. It also underscores the role of social media in amplifying conflicts between public figures and the speed at which such exchanges can escalate into broader cultural and political discussions.
