Electricity, which seemed impossible due to many failed attempts by experts have now become a norm in the world today. One can imagine themselves standing inside of a large warehouse filled with batteries, stacked up from top to bottom. Now, these batteries are not your regular flashlight batteries but are industrial power houses that can light up a whole neighborhood if not a community too for hours. This is something big that has changed electricity.

The electricity company operated basically in the same pattern for years. They had to burn coal or natural gas, spin some turbines, and send electricity through power lines and cables to one's house right after a switch is flipped. It was hard to operate because any mistake made would cost fortunes to fix.

Energy storage is wiping away this old method of doing things, and to be honest, this change is very necessary. Finally, the code has been cracked about how one can  capture electricity and hold onto it until they are ready to use it. This is not a fantasy imagined for the future . It is already in motion right now, transforming how electricity companies operate and how regular people engage with their electricity bills.

It all started in 2010, when storing energy in lithium-ion batteries was outrageously expensive but the breakthrough manifested when batteries got way, way cheaper and affordable. Today, the price has dropped down to around eighty or ninety percent. Instantly, what was thought to be impossible became not just possible but beneficial as well. Electric car companies deserve some accolades because their desire for a better, cheaper battery sparked and motivated their zeal to make all of this work.

For a more practical point of view, one can  imagine having solar panels generating power in the scorching afternoon sun, to a ridiculously expected degree. So, instead of wasting all that beautiful clean energy, you fill it into batteries. At dusk, when the sun goes down and everyone is settled at home from work and school, exhausted and ready to chill out, that stored sunshine is released  back into the grid.

The old criticism that renewable energy is not to be trusted is proved otherwise. Of course, the wind does not blow all the time and the sun sets to rest every night, but at least one knows they can save up energy for rainy days, which is of course wisdom. Storing these energies from wind and solar makes it  just as reliable as any fossil fuel plant, except that there is no pollution of any sort and one does not need to pay for fuel that keeps getting more expensive.

Well, as for the power companies, they are a little bit scared, and honestly? It's very expected. Because their entire business was established on massive power plants that cost an arm and leg to build and whose construction took years of sweat and planning but now someone drops a battery system that are the same as the size of a few school buses put together, and it performs the same functions as these power companies just for little or no cost. Additionally, one can install these things practically wherever they may be, and that means one does not need those giant power plants implanted on the outskirts of town anymore.

The most interesting part is when regular people get accustomed to this innovation. Homeowners are now installing batteries in their garages not far from their solar panels, ultimately turning themselves into mini electricity companies. Whatever happens to the grid during a storm, or whirlwind does not affect their power because their lights stay on. If there is a rise in electricity prices during heat waves, all they need to do is turn on their energised batteries and laugh at the expensive rates everyone else is paying and complaining about. Some wise ones are even selling extra power back to the utility and making their cool money.

Storing solar and wind power have more ripple effects than one would think. Electric cars are run on batteries and wheels that could supply power back into the house if an outage should occur. Energy storage is a whole lot of technology; that is unleashing a whole ecosystem of innovations.

But what really matters? the future of electric grid is nothing compared to the past grid. Few giant plants would not longer push power downhill to everyone else, but rather  build an extensive network where energy spreads around in every direction and to everyone. Neighbors can help each other power their houses during a blackout using their power energy. Your electric car could aid in stabilising the grid during a heat wave.

Places faced with constant power outages as a result of hurricanes or wildfires or just poor infrastructure, power storage gives hope. If there are worries about climate change, this innovation is the missing piece that makes the future of renewable energy  actually achievable. 

Amazingly, this is just the beginning. The technology keeps improving, the prices keep dropping, and the installations keep multiplying. What seems impressive today will look quaint in ten years.
