Abia State Governor Alex Otti has announced that the state is no longer subject to power outages caused by Nigeria’s national grid failures.
The governor made the announcement on Thursday while speaking with journalists at the Government House in Umuahia.
Otti said his government has invested in renewable energy projects. These projects turn organic waste into biogas used to produce electricity.
He explained that waste materials, instead of being thrown away, are now converted into clean energy for residents.
According to the governor, this new power system has reduced Abia’s dependence on the national grid. He said the state is now more independent in electricity supply.
Otti added that the new power arrangement has been discussed and approved by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
He defined the project as a pilot programme. He stated that it is primarily intended to power farms and key areas around Umuahia.
The governor stated that the state is also working to finalise financial agreements with EEDC. He noted that funds are being raised to complete the process.
Otti revealed that on December 24, Abia took over the regulation of electricity within the state. This role was transferred from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.
He explained that power generation, distribution, and transmission will now be regulated by the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority.
The governor said this move will improve efficiency and give the state more control over its power supply.
Otti expressed happiness with the progress made so far. He said the goal is to ensure steady power for residents and protect the state from future national grid collapses.
